Farm History

The Organic Research, Education and Outreach Center (including the Old Dairy) in Morgantown borders State Route 705. This 105-acre site was acquired in 1949 through a gift to the Davis College. Buildings on the farm include a 2,300 square-foot combination office, shop, and storage building, a livestock handling facility, and a 5,300 square-foot barn for machine storage. The farm has well-maintained roads and water available for irrigation on part of the farm. WVU Facilities Management uses about four acres of the area for storage of items related to maintenance and upkeep of the campus’ buildings and grounds.

Research activities: The Organic Farm is home to the West Virginia University Organic Research Project, which provides scientifically sound research and education to support organic growers and gardeners. The project began in 1998 when the farm was selected as the site and a multidisciplinary team was assembled to conduct research. Funding from several sources helps support sustainable organic research. All aspects of organic crop production are included – horticulture, agronomy, soil science, animal science, soil biology, plant pathology, entomology, weed science, and agricultural economics.
